What a surprise!

"Youth and internet"

"15-24 year olds across Europe are spending less time watching TV and listening to the radio as a result of using the Internet, according to research from the European Interactive Advertising Association (EIAA), the pan-European trade organisation for sellers of interactive media. Almost half of 15-24 year olds (46%) are watching less TV, preferring instead to browse the web while 22% are listening to less radio. A third of those questioned are even reading less, choosing to consume information over the Internet.

Activities done less as a result of using the Internet:
Watching TV .................... 46%
Talking on the phone ........ 34%
Reading newspapers ......... 33%
Reading books ................. 32%
Listening to the radio ....... 22%

Music and Architecture

"Portugal doesn't really need Rem Koolhaas. It reputedly produces more architects per head of population than any other country in the world. And it has two of the greatest living architects - Alvaro Siza and Eduardo Souta de Moura - sharing an office in Porto, its second city."

"Creative consumers"

Design your own revolution

Innovation was once the work of an individual. Now - from weblogs to mountain bikes - we are inventing the things we want to use, writes Charles Leadbeater.

"Anti-temptation lock"

"Lock your ice-cream against other people's craves"

Ben & Jerry's, ice-cream makers had a brilliant marketing idea based on a simple consumer insight: Isn't it irritating when you're wandering around in the kitchen looking forward to eat your favorite ice-cream, only to find out that someone else has eaten the last spoon?

A Ben & Jerry's seem to have found a solution.

"One agency in five places"

Great interview by John Hegarty, co-founder of TBWA\London in the 70's, co-founder and current chairman of BBH - Bartle Bogle Hegarty to the website I Have an Idea.

Here's some quoting bits:

On ad agencies
"The biggest problem for advertising agencies is none of them act as brands."

On account planning
"We have a fundamental belief that it is all very well having great creative ideas, but if they're on the wrong strategy, what?s the point?

"So ... planning helps us deliver that more effectively and in a more focused way than if we didn't have it. So that's why we have planning."

"It's about understanding and having an awareness of what's going on in the marketplace and having a more acute sense of consumer trends and being able to implement it into our strategic and brand thinking, so that we can then create the kind of advertising that makes a difference."

On the clients
"(...) when they're selecting an agency, it isn't about looking at a wall of ads and going, 'I like that one so I'll go with these people.' It's about getting clients to understand, that here are a group of people that I can have an intelligent conversation with and who really are beginning to understand my business and who can therefore produce, once they've understood my business, some outstanding creative work."
