"There is a paradox at the heart of our lives. Most people want more income and strive for it. Yet as Western societies have got richer, their people have become no happier."

What is this obsession with happiness? We're not meant to be happy - if we we're happy we'd stop. And then, unhappily, we'd die. It's like hunger - it doesn't matter how much you eat, you can still be hungry for more. There are sound reasons for this. It keeps us alive.
